Building a Better Player: Tournament Lists

When putting together lists, especially for tournaments, you have to consider what you are willing to play along side that list. The two lists can’t overlap character models/units and need to serve different roles In the case of my Goreshade, Lord of Ruin list I discussed previously, I need something that can handle other list types and won’t repeat models that are not allowed. My first run through was this Skarre list:

Bonejacks & Ghosts

56 / 56 (50+6)    Warcaster(s) : 1/1    Warjack(s) : 5    Battle Engines : 0    Solos : 2    Units : 3

Pirate Queen Skarre – WJ: +6
–    Stalker – PC: 4
–    Stalker – PC: 4
–    Stalker – PC: 4
–    Stalker – PC: 4

Aiakos, Scourge of the Meredius – PC: 3
–    Kraken – PC: 19
Gorman di Wulfe, Rogue Alchemist – PC: 2

Necrosurgeon & Stitch Thralls – Necrosurgeon & 3 Grunts: 2
Blackbane’s Ghost Raiders – Blackbane and 9 Ghost Raiders: 9
The Withershadow Combine – Malevolus, Admonia, & Tremulus: 5

As you can see, it is an overall small list that could hit like a frieght train. Based on the tournament guidelines of Steamroller 2014, I can not include the following models/units in the Goreshade, Lord of Ruin list: Aiakos, Gorman di Wulfe, Blackbane’s Ghost Raiders, and The Withershadow Combine. That last one brings up a flag right away. As a reminder, here is the Goreshade, Lord of Ruin list.

Undead Charge V

55 / 55 (50+5)    Warcaster(s) : 1/1    Warjack(s) : 1    Battle Engines : 0    Solos : 1    Units : 5

Goreshade, Lord of Ruin – WJ: +5
–    Kraken – PC: 19

Darragh Wrathe – PC: 4

Bane Riders – Leader & 4 Grunts: 11
Soulhunters – Leader & 4 Grunts: 9
Mechanithralls – Leader & 9 Grunts: 5
Necrosurgeon & Stitch Thralls – Necrosurgeon & 3 Grunts: 2
The Withershadow Combine – Malevolus, Admonia, & Tremulus: 5

That repeated character unit (marked in red) isn’t allowed. So, I have to look at which list needs the Withershadow  more and what can I put in its place in the list that doesn’t need them as much.

I can see using Admonia in the Goreshade3 list with great efficency due to the free upkeep that she provides. Skarre’s spell list doesn’t have nearly as many upkeeps. Only.  Tremulus and his Puppet Master * Action or Attack helps out any model/unit with the ability to reroll one missed attack roll or damage roll or CMD check. It lasts for a round too. Remember that only one model can be reroll, even if you cast it on a unit. I can see putting this on ANYTHING, but having Soul Hunters or Bane Riders makes it even better. Even without exploring Malevolus and his Dark Industries ability that he grants to the unit. That pretty much decides that they should go with Goreshade, Lord of Ruin.

Wraith Engine

Wraith Engine

But what should replace them? With 5 points, I have several options, but if I am willing to give up one of the Stalkers, I have 9 points that I can put to an amazing use. Going with 3 Stalkers still allows for the assassination for all intents and purposes, but also frees up enough points to include the Wraith Engine. Why the Wraith Engine? Well, lots of reasons:

  • He collects souls and can use those to either buy additional attacks or boost attack/damage rolls.
  • Unhallowed – As long as Blackbane’s Ghosts are within 10″ of the Wriath Engine, they gain +2 ARM and don’t suffer blast damage, making them more survivalble.
  • Wraith Walker – Like Denegrah 2, the Wraith Engine can gain Incorporeal for a round. The only restriction is if it used the ability last round. Combined with the feat, you can make sure the Engine is more survivable during a round you will likely use it to attack anyway.
  • Apparition – This one is pretty exciting. You can place the model completely within 2″ of its current location every Control phase. That is effectively a move of 8″ but that placement avoids free strikes.
  • Dark Shroud – Same as Bane Thralls and Tartarus. Makes him all the stronger on Skarre’s feat turn.
  • Ectoplasm – Honestly, I don’t see using the ability often, but it lets you spend a soul token to place 3″ AOE cloud effects on the table for a cost of one per AOE
  • Reach – Reach is powerful in the game and on feat turn with soul collection, he could be quite the power house.
  • 20 Damage – He has a low defense but his ARM is an impressive 18 (23 under Skarre’s feat) and with 20 boxes he might be able to survive nicely.
  • Terror – Yeah, scary. While it won’t affect too many things when it does work, he can make short work of models that don’t fight back or just pass right through them when better targets present themselves.

So what does the new Skarre list look like with these changes? Take a look

Bonejacks & Ghosts III

56 / 56 (50+6)    Warcaster(s) : 1/1    Warjack(s) : 4    Battle Engines : 1    Solos : 2    Units : 2

Pirate Queen Skarre – WJ: +6
–    Stalker – PC: 4
–    Stalker – PC: 4
–    Stalker – PC: 4

Wraith Engine – PC: 9

Aiakos, Scourge of the Meredius – PC: 3
–    Kraken – PC: 19
Gorman di Wulfe, Rogue Alchemist – PC: 2

Necrosurgeon & Stitch Thralls – Necrosurgeon & 3 Grunts: 2
Blackbane’s Ghost Raiders – Blackbane and 9 Ghost Raiders: 9

I like this one quite a bit better. You might have noticed the III after  the title. There was another version that isn’t nearly as fun. It featured Deathjack and a couple of Stalkers. This list sems far more damaging.
