We continue our discussion on my new found strange desire to play the Trollbloods. This is nothing that I take lightly. After so much time, I have to get this ball rolling or I need to drop this bad joke and set these trolls free for a better home that will care for them and play them. Well, I am not about to do that, so let’s talk about skin tones for these guys. I don’t necessarily want to follow the standard, studio paint scheme, but I don’t want to stray too far away from the defined look of the faction either. This leaves me in a difficult position. What can I do that will give them some individuality without making them look foreign or alien?
I use Reaper Master Series paints. While I tend to spend more on my paints than the average person that has a full collection of P3 paints, I benefit by never needing to mix my colors. Reaper releases their paint line in Triads. It provides the painter with the base color, shadow, and highlight in one easy three bottle set. If there is a particular look that I want, I either dig those colors out or just get a new triad. I love the concept and have been a fan ever since. They were the first models specific paints I purchased and I have never really been disappointed. Let’s explore some possibilities. After delving through my collection of paints and consulting the Reaper website for color samples, I came up with some possibilities. First of all, there are several shades of blue that are possible. Using the aforementioned color “swatches” from the Reaper Website, let’s look at one that is most like the studio paint scheme.

As you can see, it isn’t a bad look, but it is very close to the studio colors for Trollbloods. While I am not opposed to having some models that have this color set, I don’t think I want to have the entire faction looking like the studio. It just won’t get noticed.

That is an interesting combination too. Not too shabby at all. But again, this might be a bit nice for a one off model, but not for the overall look of the faction.
| Templar Blue Triad | |||
09019 Midnight Blue |
09055 Breonne Blue |
09056 Templar Blue |
09057 Ashen Blue |

We might be getting somewhere here. By adding the Midnight blue as the shadow color, I have deepened the overall scheme and allow for a greater variety of skintone by omitting either the Midnight Blue or the Ashen blue depending on my preference and whim. Since I am all about serving my whim, this is a good option. Let’s look at one more possibility.
| Stormy Grey Triad | |||

09089 Cloudy Grey |
09038 Rainy Grey |
09090 Misty Grey |

I took the same approach here. While it doesn’t show well in the color swatches above, there is an unlaying blue tint to these greys and by adding the rainy grey to the mix, I achieve the same options as I did with the Templar Blue Triad above. I can also tack on more options should I desire that. Grey might be just enough different that I can get away with it with the other colors that I think might go into this faction. I had prepared even more options, but I think I will not use them as they are colors that I use more often in my Cryx models and don’t want to muddy the waters when it comes to cross faction schemes.
So now, you get a say as well. Please take a moment and select your favorite option. Please bear in mind that I am not tying myself to the whim of others, but I will weight your collective opinion greatly when making my final decision.

I like the idea of grey trolls – it’d give you a variety of shades to work with and the ability to go into other colors for the elementals – red for fire, green for swamp, blue for electrical, maybe weirder shades of grey for the slag…
Don’t you have a bunch of OTHER models to paint first? Khador? Gators? Cryx???
I do, but there is no harm in keeping things interesting, is there? You forgot Mercenaries, by the way.
Also, please note that the poll will close on July 25th at midnight. So vote in the next two weeks if you want me to consider your opinion.
I voted Templar blue – I play trolls and have a darker deeper blue skin tone that seems to work rather well.
But grey scale would be really cool but hard to execute. I say go for that challenge!
Glad to have another warm body joining the Scrum!
