Mega Painting Weekend

Posted by: Neomorte    in Painting, Riverdog Challenge, Warmachine & Hordes

I cranked out a hell of a lot of painting this weekend. My wife was out of town for unfortunate circumstance and I had the kids from Thursday until about 9:00 last night by myself. My oldest daughter was a pretty big help and my second oldest was pretty much sick the whole time.  My younger two were pretty good overall and didn’t give me much guff each night when it was time for bed. So at about 10:00 pm each night, I would grab a drink and head down the stairs to paint and paint and paint. I took my 25 point list (and a few extra models) for Fight Club from abyssally behind to nearly done in 3.5 nights. Tonight, I have to base the Seether, a Slayer (not in the list, but needed for Resurgence), a Stalker, and Nightmare.Epic Skarre and a Deathripper are done and arc marked. Tonight they get sealed. After that, I can finish painting up my Skarlock and get started on a unit of Bile Thralls…and a few other bits of Cryxian goodness.

After I have the models based, arc marked, and maybe sealed, I will get some images up for all of you to see.

As promised, I present some images of Epic Skarre’s jacks. They are works in progress (WIP) and do not represent the final product that they are destined to be.

And it gave me another chance to tweak my photography skills/setup. Without further delay, I give you images:

A Fitting Nightmare

Posted by: Neomorte    in Painting, Riverdog Challenge, Warmachine & Hordes

I really like Nightmare. He has a great sculpt, great fluff, and great rules. Nightmare will have a place in each and every Fight Club list that I run. He will hit the table first with epic Skarre. Being a character jack, I didn’t want to leave his paint scheme ordinary. I wanted to do something for him that really embraced his murderous nature and thought it would help me plan for my epic Denegrha paint scheme as I wanted the Wraith Witch and her killer/favorite jack to match.
I came up with such a unique look that I have to consider painting more like it. I used Vallejo Model Color Gunmetal Blue and Reaper Master Series Scorched Metal. Scorched metal looks like bronze but is much darker. After an application of P3 Armor Wash, it should look truly shadowy. The Gunmetal Blue is a nice compliment to the Stormy Sea triad that I am using on cloth. An application of P3 armor wash on it will have a similar effect on those portions as well. It will deepen and make it look like Nightmare is built of shadow infused metals.

Expect some WIP shots this evening. Now that I have a decent set up for taking images, I hope to share quite a few more with those of you that are following along.

Hell, it is good enough I am rethinking all my jacks. Hmmmm….

So the big announcement has dropped. The Riverdog Challenge: Fight Club has started its full powered steam into next year’s eagerly anticipated release of Warmachine MKII and the Open Beta of the Hordes MKII rules set. Awesome. Now I don’t have to talk in hushed tones or use secret handshakes. I have looked forward to this for quite some time and was chomping at the bit to really get into it. Yeah, I said was.

I have a confession. I am a horrible procrastinator. If there were a prize for procrastination, I am sure I would be in the running to win…when I get around to it. Because of that uncanny ability to put something off to the last minute, I took up the challenge of Fight Club to push myself in a different way. Oh sure, the win loss record means a little something to me. I am a bit too competitive to have it not, but that is not the thing I want to drive me. I have a strange cycle to break. I have been playing Warmachine for close to 5 years now and my very first infantry unit I got, Iron Fang Pikemen are still mostly worn primer and good intentions.

The fact of the matter is that I have 4551 points of Khador and I am guessing that 3/4 of that faction is unpainted. Legion weighs in at 3696 and there are only a few models that are actually painted. My Mercenaries weigh in far better at 3373 points and I am guessing that over half of that is painted. I can’t allow this trend to continue with this challenge. Every game has to be played fully painted.

I got my 25 point list pointed out. I chose epic Skarre for my caster. The model is sculpted by one of my all-time favorite sculptors, Werner Klocke. She is amazing with jacks because of Seas of Fate. And hey, she is the Pirate Queen. I don’t need much more reason than that. Here is the 25 point list:

eSkarre
Nightmare
Seether
Reaper
Stalker x2

I am struggling with the jacks the most. I have developed a block on them. I primed them grey in an effort to take a short cut. That didn’t necessarily work out well for me, but I can work around it easy enough. Should it become too taxing, I will strip them and start over. I intend to have them looking very rusted and verdigris on tarnished brass. I am having a bit of problem putting brush to jacks though. I want to get most of the jacks done soon though. I got A BUNCH to paint for the jump to 50 points and it only gets worse from there.

Unlike the jacks, Skarre will have very fair skin, a deep purple captain’s coat and a shadowed steel on her weapons. She is looking good. Pictures forthcoming, I promise. She is sitting on my paint desk with base coats on her and I hear her beaconing from more…

Time to get crackin’ again.
